How We Should Be Celebrating Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti: Cultural Programs or Loud Street Procession?

Introduction

Every year on April 14th, India pays tribute to one of its most brilliant minds — Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Known as the principal architect of our Constitution and a tireless advocate for social justice, equality, and education, Dr. Ambedkar‘s legacy is not just a symbol of pride but also a guide for India’s moral and intellectual future.

But as I stepped out to witness this year’s Ambedkar Jayanti, I found myself reflecting deeply on how we are celebrating this day.

A Shift in the Tone of Celebrations

Traditionally, I’ve seen Ambedkar Jayanti marked with:

  • Educational seminars 🧠
  • Public tributes with quotes and speeches 🗣️
  • Cultural programs celebrating Dalit pride and history 🎭

However, this time around, I saw groups with loud speakers, drums, and decorative bands marching on the roads — celebrating with fervor, but seemingly disconnected from the values Ambedkar stood for.

Don’t get me wrong — celebration is important. But this sight led me to ask:

“Is this how Babasaheb Ambedkar would have wanted us to honor him?”

Why This Matters

Dr. Ambedkar wasn’t just a political leader — he was a scholar, an economist, a lawyer, and a visionary. He dedicated his life to uplifting the oppressed through education, law, and democratic reform.

Wouldn’t it be more fitting if we celebrated Ambedkar Jayanti by:

  • Organizing student debates or essay competitions on his teachings?
  • Hosting community discussions on social equality and justice?
  • Encouraging cultural programs that reflect the struggles and achievements of Dalit voices?
  • Launching initiatives to help the underprivileged, in his name?

A Better Way Forward

Let’s be clear — this isn’t about shaming street processions or joy. It’s about aligning our celebrations with purpose.

Imagine an India where:

  • Schools and colleges hold Ambedkar Dialogues
  • Communities host Ambedkar Literacy Drives
  • People dance, sing, and celebrate through culturally meaningful expressions

That would be a true tribute to a man who said:

“Cultivation of mind should be the ultimate aim of human existence.”

Final Thoughts

Let’s not reduce Ambedkar Jayanti to just a parade of noise. Let’s make it a day of reflection, awareness, and empowerment. Let’s educate, inspire, and build a more equal society — just like Dr. Ambedkar envisioned.

Jai Bhim!
